Import from Turkey

Turkey pairs a deep manufacturing base with short routes to the Middle East, the Caucasus and Europe. Here is how B2B buyers import from it, and where GOLDVESTRA coordinates.

Turkey as a sourcing market

Turkey sits between Europe, the Middle East, the Caucasus and Central Asia, and its industry is built to serve all of them. Large clusters produce textiles and apparel, home textiles, furniture, ceramic tiles and natural stone, steel and fabricated metal products, household appliances, automotive parts and packaged food. Buyers often treat it as a middle option: more flexible and closer than distant mass-production origins, and usually more accessible on price than premium European brands.

Proximity also changes how you work. Flights are short, factory visits are realistic, and road freight can connect suppliers to buyers in several neighboring regions without a sea leg. Our Turkey sourcing service finds and screens the manufacturers; this page covers the import side of the transaction.

Where Turkish suppliers are strong

General strengths only; we assess each requirement and each supplier on its own merits.

Textiles and home textiles

Fabrics, apparel, towels and bedding, from private-label production to fabric supply, with test requirements that vary by market.

Furniture and interiors

Residential, office and hospitality furniture, with custom finishes and project-scale orders.

Building materials

Ceramic tiles, marble and other natural stone, steel profiles, plumbing and fittings for construction projects.

Automotive parts

A large supplier industry serving vehicle makers and the aftermarket, where traceability and certification matter.

Appliances and machinery

White goods, HVAC products and light-to-medium industrial machinery from established makers.

Packaged food and agricultural goods

Dried fruit, nuts, olive oil and processed food, with health, labeling and halal requirements set by the destination.

Shipping options from Turkey

Turkey’s geography gives importers more modes to choose from than most origins. The right one depends on the goods, the destination and the schedule, and the cheapest per-kilo option is not always the cheapest overall once handling and delays are counted. Transit times depend on carriers, border and port conditions, so we plan around them but do not promise them.

For a broader comparison of modes, see air freight versus sea freight. Booking and handover are arranged with licensed forwarders and carriers through our logistics coordination service, where legally permissible.

At a glance

  • Road freight, full or part load, often under TIR carnet to neighboring regions and Europe
  • Sea containers from ports on the Mediterranean, Aegean and Marmara coasts
  • Ro-ro ferry services for loaded trailers on some Mediterranean and Black Sea lanes
  • Air cargo, mainly through Istanbul, for urgent or high-value goods
  • Combined road and sea routes where a destination is not directly reachable by one mode

Customs, trade agreements and pricing

Turkey has a customs union with the European Union covering industrial goods, so many Turkish industrial products can move into the EU without customs duty when they are in free circulation and properly documented, typically with an A.TR movement certificate. Elsewhere, duty depends on the destination’s tariff and on whether a trade agreement applies. Turkey is party to a number of bilateral agreements, and preferential treatment requires proof of origin that meets the agreement’s rules. Do not assume it applies; have your customs broker check the HS code and origin first.

On price, Turkish currency and cost movements can shorten how long a quote stays valid, and suppliers frequently quote in US dollars or euros. Agree validity, currency and payment timing in writing, and compare offers on a landed-cost basis. The import cost factors guide lists what to add to the supplier’s price.

Documents for a shipment from Turkey

Requirements differ by goods and destination; typical documents are:

  • Sales contract or purchase order and proforma invoice
  • Commercial invoice and packing list with HS codes and origin
  • Turkish export customs declaration, lodged by the exporter or its customs broker
  • CMR consignment note (road), bill of lading (sea) or air waybill (air)
  • Certificate of origin or movement certificate, such as A.TR, where an agreement or the destination requires it
  • Conformity certificates and test reports, for example CE marking for EU-bound goods
  • Health, phytosanitary or other certificates for food and agricultural products
  • Insurance certificate where the Incoterm requires it

Quality and inspection

Turkish suppliers range from large exporters with their own testing laboratories to small workshops, so quality control should be matched to the product. For textiles, that means specifying fabric weight, shrinkage and colorfastness requirements and testing against them. For furniture, it means approving materials, finishes and packing. For natural stone, shade and veining differ between blocks and batches, so panels for one project should come from the same lot.

Because travel is easy, buyers of larger orders often visit the factory, and independent inspection companies can do so on your behalf. We coordinate samples, inspections and corrective actions and recommend the checks proportional to the order value. Our guide to vetting international suppliers sets out the baseline checks for any origin.

Compliance caveats for Turkey sourcing

Turkish exports and the onward movement of goods are subject to export controls, sanctions regimes and the licensing rules of the destination, and some goods or destinations are restricted. Transit through third countries can bring its own requirements. GOLDVESTRA works with licensed partners where legally permissible and subject to applicable regulations, sanctions and licensing; no route is treated as available until it has been assessed for your product, end user and destination. The importer of record is responsible for the destination country’s declarations, duties and taxes. This page is general guidance, not legal, customs or tax advice.

Importing from Turkey: frequently asked questions

Do Turkish goods enter the EU duty-free?

Industrial goods in free circulation generally benefit from the EU-Turkey customs union, but agricultural products, steel and other categories can follow different rules. Confirm the classification and documents with your customs broker.

Is road freight a realistic option from Turkey?

For many neighboring and European destinations, yes. It can be faster than sea for suitable cargo and avoids transshipment, but border crossings, permits and driver regulations apply. Licensed carriers handle those.

Why do Turkish suppliers shorten their quote validity?

Currency and input-cost movements can change a supplier’s margin quickly. A short validity, or a quote in a hard currency, protects them. Agree validity and payment timing in the proposal.

Can I visit a factory before ordering?

Usually, and we recommend it for larger or repeat orders. If you cannot travel, an independent inspection company can audit the factory and report back.

Do you handle shipments to countries outside the region?

Destinations are wherever you are, subject to that country’s rules and to sanctions and licensing requirements. Start with a request for a quote and we will assess the route.
